Sleep Out so others can Sleep In

"This is a humanitarian issue that transcends party politics and one that we cannot afford to ignore."

A team from social housing and care provider emh group was among those taking part in the Long Eaton Sleep Out on Friday 26 April to help raise awareness of homelessness.

The Sleep Out has become a popular annual event organised by the Long Eaton-based Canaan Trust, an independent charity which has been providing supported accommodation for homeless men in and around Erewash since 1995.

Chair of the Canaan Trust, David Gee, was joined by Mayor of Erewash Councillor Chris Corbett and emh group Chief Executive Chan Kataria to launch the overnight event in the town centre. After rousing speeches from all three, around 50 people from various organisations bedded down for the night in support of the charity and to shine a light on the growing homelessness crisis.

Through their efforts the emh group team raised over £1000 for the charity.

Chan Kataria said: “On a single night last autumn there were 358 rough sleepers in the East Midlands – almost double the figure from ten years ago. More shockingly, 28 people identified as rough sleepers died last year. We want to work with each and every agency in the East Midlands to help put an end to rough sleeping and homelessness. This is a humanitarian issue that transcends party politics and one that we cannot afford to ignore.”

David Gee added: “The Trust values its close relationship with emh group as we work collaboratively to support and help those in need across our community.”
